Those are two words you probably never thought you would see together. Sadly, there are Christians that whether they realize it or not, are engaging in a form of witchcraft. Let me explain.
A few months ago, a client and I were talking on the phone and we were talking about their receivables and although I don’t remember exactly what specific event we were talking about, the client’s response was something like “when that happens, we just pray that their business fails and we move on.” When she realized I was taken aback by her comment, she quickly changed the subject and got off of the phone.
The example above demonstrates what I am referring to. God is NOT your personal destroyer who carries out your destructive wishes. You may be addressing your prayer to God, but God isn’t answering that type of prayer. However, there are those who are more than happy to accommodate your desire for destruction against others. When you pray like this, you are actually partnering with a spirit of witchcraft to bring about destruction in someone else’s life. You are, by an act of your will, imposing your will (their destruction) upon someone else. This is the very definition of witchcraft. The fact that you put a beard on it, give it sandals and a robe and put ‘In Jesus’ name’ at the end of it, does not change the evil nature of such a prayer. Let’s look at some less obvious examples of this.
If you find yourself using words like force, make, cause, kill, destroy, etc. then you may be partnering with the wrong spirit. Saying things like:
- ‘God, force this person into a place where buying my car at my asking price is their only option.’
- ‘God, make <person’s name> fall in love with me.’
- ‘God, cause <person’s name> to only think of my company and make them buy our product.’
- ‘Lord, those people weren’t nice to me, cause them to get sick so they will learn their lesson.’
During the 2016 elections, I saw posts where people said things like “I’m praying that he/she is killed” and “I’m praying he/she gets really sick and has to quit.” You probably saw similar posts on your screen too.
Sounds silly? Yet, we have all heard people say similar things. The people saying these things are doing so out of ignorance. Are they actually witches? No, not in the classic sense, but the methods are the same. They are partnering with forces of darkness to cause their own will to be forced upon others either by what I call witchcraft prayers or by speaking curses over other people. Oh, and here’s a newsflash for you, this IS A SIN. It is evil and it needs to stop. God says in 1 Samuel 15:23 that “Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.” The reason for this is that individuals are pushing their will over the will of others, or even over God’s will and that is the essence of witchcraft.
God gave everyone free will to choose on their own. So he doesn’t make or force people to do things against their will. God is a God of Love not a taskmaster and certainly not your personal “hit man” (destroyer) that you get to send to those who offend you.
We are to bless those who curse us. Jesus said in Mathew 5:44-45: “But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you, so that you may become sons of your Father in Heaven. For He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” We are to be a light in the darkness, not more darkness. We need to speak life into other people instead of curses. The best way to do this is to speak and pray the word of God over people.
I can hear some of you now “Whoa! Partnering with forces of darkness? That’s a little intense. They’re just praying a lame prayer.” Actually, to be precise, they are partnering with a spirit of witchcraft. Is it possible to partner with a spirit? Please turn to Luke 9:54-55: And seeing, His disciples James and John said, Lord, do You desire that we command fire to come down from Heaven and consume them, even as Elijah did? But He turned and rebuked them and said, You do not know of what spirit you are. Two of his disciples were rebuked because they were partnering with the WRONG spirit. This is why Jesus said “You do not know OF WHAT SPIRIT you are.”
Look also at Matthew 16:21-24: From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took Him and began to rebuke Him, saying, God be gracious to You, Lord! This shall never be to You. But He turned and said to Peter, Go, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you do not savor the things that are of God, but those that are of men. Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.
In the KJV it says “Get thee behind me, Satan.” Although Jesus was TALKING AT Peter, He was really talking TO THE SPIRIT that was influencing him. Peter was partnered with the forces of darkness in an attempt to prevent what God was wanting to do. Now, did James, John and Peter strike a deal with the devil on some dark corner somewhere? Of course not. They thought they were doing good. It sounded good. Perhaps even Godly… But it wasn’t. The enemy was whispering in their ears and they believed it and acted upon it. It is the same thing with those who are engaging in this form of witchcraft. It is subtle. It may even feel right. But, make no mistake, it is evil and it will hinder the real blessings of God in your life.
So how should we pray? Well, to put it in simple English, instead of praying what you want, you pray what God wants by praying what God says about the situation. You pray God’s word. For example: You know somebody that isn’t quite living the way God would have them live? How about praying Ephesians 1:17-23 over them? Personalize it. Plug the person’s name into it. Let’s say someone named “Bob” needs prayer. You could pray like this:
Father, I thank you:
…that YOU, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give Bob the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of you, that the eyes of his understanding being enlightened, that Bob may know what is the hope of His calling, and what is the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us, the ones believing according to the working of His mighty strength which He worked in Christ in raising Him from the dead, and He seated Him at His right hand in the heavenlies, far above all principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name being named, not only in this world, but also in the coming age. And He has put all things under His feet and gave Him to be Head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
You could also pray Eph 6:10-20 over our friend Bob.
Father, thank you that Bob is growing strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Thank you that he puts on the whole armor of God so that he may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the world’s rulers, of the darkness of this age, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Thank you therefore, that Bob takes to himself the whole armor of God, that he may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Thank you that Bob stands therefore, having his loins girded about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness and his feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, I thank you that Bob takes the shield of faith, with which he shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Thank you that he takes the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching to this very thing with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. Thank you also that utterance may be given to him, that he may open his mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, and that he may speak boldly, as he ought to speak.
You can do the same thing over yourself. Simply cut out Bob’s name and the he’s and change that to “I” as in “Thank you that I stand therefore…”
No matter what the topic or the problem, there is a scripture that you can stand on for yourself or for someone else. Take it and personalize it, and pray it over that situation. This is not a law that you must pray this way, but by doing so, you are putting yourself into agreement with the Word of God. Once you have done this a while you will be able to use your own words that say the same thing and you will be praying in accordance to His will instead of your own.
If you have been one of those who have partnered with the wrong spirit in your prayers, take a moment to repent and to renounce witchcraft out of your life. Tell it to leave. Then start praying God’s word over situations in your life and the lives of others. If you are in a situation where you simply do not know how to pray, then pray in the Spirit. That will be another topic for another day. In the meantime, ask someone who knows how to pray to receive this amazing gift.
This will be my last post for a while. I will not be posting anything else during the month of February owing to an immensely busy schedule. I will be back in March with more to say on this and other topics as we study God’s word together. Until then, may God’s richest blessings be yours.
